Review on Sony NW-A55 16GB High-Resolution Digital Music Player Walkman Moonlit Blue - International Version with Seller Warranty by William Dean

Revainrating 3 out of 5

OK, but back to portable audio/video

As far as portable music goes, I prefer the Walkman form factor to the current-generation iPod that I also own. It also has more weight due to stronger materials. The layout and responsiveness of the interface format are fine. The sound quality was fine. I've tried AAC, bought AAC (from iTunes) and MPEG and it came preinstalled with a track in each of the high definition FLAC and DSD formats plus an additional track in ALAC or AIFF format, although I can't remember , which one . I refuse to give a rating of the Revain's sound quality as I didn't spend much time testing it with quality headphones before sending it back. The same goes for battery life testing. Complaints: I really don't like that the charging cable is proprietary. That only complicates things. The content management software was clunky. The fact that it supports iTunes is currently debatable as Apple no longer supports iTunes. Apple Music is NOT supported which means that dragging and dropping Apple Music where all my 9K tracks are stored failed. Also, when I tried to drag and drop supported files from the MacOS Finder to the A55 via the Music Center app (for MacOS), I got an "unsupported file type" error. I was able to drag the files from the iTunes folder directly onto the connected device in Finder, i.e. without using the Music Center at all, and the A55 was able to decode and play those files. In general, everything is fine with the device. But I'm returning it and trying FiiO M11 instead. From my research, the M11 supports headphone-less radio, can run apps, has more decoder versatility, produces better sound, and has more wired headphone jacks. Note that the M11 isn't typically seen as a direct competitor to the A55, while the Sony A105 is.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • High price
