My local bike shop has always acted as a deterrent to asking questions about freewheels (replacement, reconditioning, cleaning, lubrication, etc.) when it's too much of a hassle or they just don't wanted to be disturbed. So, having had a few bikes that needed service on their freewheels, I finally decided to check out what it takes to just do it yourself. screwed in), remove the locking ring, put on and tighten again. One of the ratchets I had was a Shimano and the other a Suntour and both used a red grip wrench. Initial loosening of the locking ring required the use of a hammer and punch, but once loosened this wrench (or Phillips #0 screwdriver) worked great for removing and re-tightening the locking ring. I wasn't happy with the type of grease I used for the bearings and pawls and did this job a few times before finally finding a grease that would work for those little 1/8" bearings ("smooth honey", strongly recommended). It's always nice to have the right tool when you need it.
