I first bought these collars because my cats kept pulling off their other snap collars while grooming. These collars have Velcro and close very well. They are still safe for kittens as they will stretch and slip over the cat's head if the collar catches or tangles on something. They are also very light and are great for cats that have never worn them. We have five cats that wear Beastie Bands and the collars last for years. I will say that two of our cats lost their hair just below the collar. There is no skin irritation at all - this is NOT an allergic reaction to the collar. The vet said that's where he turned and rubbed the fur at that particular spot. Three of our other cats have thin fur under their collars, but again, that doesn't bother them at all. We love these collars, they stay on our kittens and have no sharp or hard clasps, edges or buckles.
