I needed to replace the drapery covering the sliding glass door to our back patio -- we put it up years ago when we first bought our home, and it is the rather formal, heavy type of drape on a traverse rod. It has actually been a bit of a pain to maintain and it is starting to look a bit tired and dated, although it is far from worn out. I'm not sure if want to replace it with the same type of drapery or if I would like something lighter and more modern this time, but that would still do a good job of darkening the room. So, I decided to try this black-out curtain. This is a large curtain panel rather than a drapery panel, and it has significantly less weight but it is still lined (light-weight black thermal lining). I ordered the grey since the curtain will be handled a lot more than the previously installed drape which operated on a drawstring principle, so it wasn't subject to as much wear and tear. The color is really more of a taupe, in my opinion, but that is okay. This is a grommet topped curtain panel that can be threaded directly onto a curtain rod with a fairly wide diameter, or attached to rings via hooks. The grommets are very large, and look okay once the curtain is installed, but they do look rather cheap on close inspection. I do like the lighter look and feel of this curtain, but I don't expect it to be anywhere near as durable and long-lasting as the heavy drapery it is replacing was. Of course, the drapery was also much more expensive. I imagine this curtain panel will likely need to be replaced at least every couple of years or so since the sliding door gets so much use. I chose the 84" length and it works very well for my door. The curtain hangs nicely and swishes out of the way easily and it gives the room a much more casual look. It does provide decent thermal protection and room darkening, although not as much as a typical thermal-line drapery panel would. The fabric is smooth but the quality is so-so. The weight and construction of this panel really seem more suited for a window than a sliding door, but this will work for the time being. The fabric is quality is about what one would expect at this price point, which is currently $36.95, and seems reasonable to me.
