Like other commenters, the instructions are best left out of the box as they are misleading about the missing shunt on the hot wire between the outlet and the switch. There is a connection that can be removed if you want each to be powered by two different wires, but I can't imagine many people would need this. If you're pretty good at wiring, this switch is pretty self-explanatory on how to wire it. I've attached a picture of the cable markers. I agree that moving the switch vertically is much better than horizontally. This is a great product if you ignore their documentation which seems to be common to all of their products.
