I bought these for needlework but as I hang all my clothes on a rope dry, I decided to look through them for washing. because I've seen so many conflicting reviews about it. It's true that these clothespins aren't the best quality and are thick from the early to mid 20th century, you won't find them anymore, but the quality is almost the same as clothespins from the 1970's and 1980's. The packaging says they can't carry more than 2 pounds. So when people complain that they can't fit into jeans or heavy blankets, they're not designed for heavy objects. It seems that most people who use them for washing don't use them in the same way as they did in the early 1900's, back then for heavier items, people soaked clothespins in warm/hot water before using them to unclip . To make them less likely to break, they would add salt to the water in which the pegs were soaked during the winter months to prevent the pegs from sticking to the rope. This shortens the life of the clothespins, but allows them to function better. That being said, they are great for regular wear like t-shirts and work great with cloth diapers. The gap in the clothespins is literally identical to 1980s clothespins, maybe some batches may be different, that was my experience. The quality of wood used today isn't as high as it was in the 1980's so they probably won't last as long as the old ones, but that seems to be the case now for all types of wooden clothespins, including those with metal clasp. .For craft purposes, they are great for making clothespin dolls. As I said above, they are identical in size and shape to those in the 1980's when it was common to make dolls out of clothespins at school. Some of them are a bit rough and need a bit of sanding, but for the price I can't complain. The round part at the top of the clothespin isn't perfectly round, it's more of an oval shape. So if you want perfect big-headed clothespin dolls, you need to buy the ones that are specially made for craft purposes. But if you can get 100 for the same price as a much smaller pack of homemade ones, that's a good option, especially since kids often want to ruin some of these and start over.
