Review on πŸ“· YONGNUO YN50mm F1.4 AF/MF Lens for Canon DSLR Camera - Enhanced Standard Prime Lens with 0.45M Minimum Focus Distance by Vinay Souphaphong ᠌

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not quite what I wanted, but mostly okay.

What can I say. I have long wanted to compare it head-on with the Canon 50mm 1,8 STM. There was a suspicion that the front lens was too small for aperture 1,4. At one time, I sold Kenon to buy Yongnuo (due to aperture). Now he made a comeback, as he again began to shoot video with a camera. And here is my result: (there is a video on YouTube, look for the channel "For good") 1. I took photos with the same aperture values for both lenses (under the same conditions) and Yongnuo each time set the shutter speed 1/3 stop longer, while even the pictures from it look a little darker. (checked several times). And this means that Yongnuo is 1/3 stop darker than stated, that is, its real aperture is 1.6. And on a fully open one, it is not very good, and its working values are from 1.6 (1.8 in real life). At the same time, the picture from Yongnuo at its 1.6 does not differ from the picture of the STM lens at 1.8. That is, yeongnuo has no advantages. But. 2. With aperture covered up to 1.8 (2 in real life), Yongnuo becomes sharper and more contrast, and so on with covers at the same (actual) aperture values. So does it make sense to buy yeongnuo? Lenses cost the same. I always photographed on it at 1.6, which means that it’s like at 1.8 Canon. In general, it was not in vain that he made a comeback.

Pros
  • 1. aperture (claimed) 2. Sharpness. 3. Reliability.
Cons
  • 1. At 1.4 low contrast and soft. 2. Real aperture is 1/3 stop less (compared with 50mm 1.8 STM) 3. Dimensions and weight. 4. On a 650D DSLR, it often misses, but in general it happened up to 90% of good frames (on the mirrorless m50, the accuracy turned out to be 100% 5. Ragged bokeh. I did not like. 6. Not suitable for video (loud and prowling focus even on dual pixel).

Very pleasant impressions in general, starting with how it lies in the hands, ending with the quality of the result. I use with Canon EOS 77D.
