I've played without a mouthpiece all my life. Then, several years ago, when I was playing, I would get hit in the jaw so hard several times a month that I almost quit basketball. I took a month off and got a mouthpiece and I'm happy to report that I'm still playing. I switched to this from a super bulky Shock Doctor basketball mouthpiece and wish I could switch sooner! He has basic defense and I play quite aggressively so it's nice to know that if you get hit you have some cushioning. I will say that it is not very tight on the teeth, which I am very happy with. My mouth hurt after playing with the shock doctor for hours. I even slept with it because I grind my teeth sometimes. Don't forget to clean your mouthguard often as these types can easily pick up bacteria.
