Some reviewers complained about the bad smell. I agree that when first tested it gave off an extremely strong and irritating odor. So I put him in the garage and turned the heat switch to 6 and let him do his thing with no food. Subsequently, what caused the smell burned out, the unpleasant smell disappeared. After this experience I decided to READ THE MANUAL and it clearly explains how to run the toaster several times without food to remove the smell. My only addition to the manual is to do it outside like in a garage as the smell is pretty strong when you first use it. I've learned my lesson: always read the instructions first! Now it works great with no smell. We are very satisfied with the size and equipment.
