If you have good access to your planer knives without removing them and you understand the mechanism of knife sharpening, you can use this inexpensive tool to sharpen knives in place. If your blades are sharp, this tool will help you keep them sharp between uses with little effort. Don't wait until your blades are dull and chipped as this tool is not designed to restore worn blades. In my experience, leveling plane irons between uses is the only option. For example, I have a 24 inch grizzly plane that has very easy top access to the blades. I clean my blades in just minutes after each use with a diamond knife sharpener I bought years ago. I have yet to replace those blades. and it's been a few years. I use this Steelex sharpener on a small 12" Makita 2030S planer/carpenter that I own and it cleans the blades to my satisfaction. I think there might be a diamond version of this sharpener that would be even better.
