To be clear, I haven't installed original radios since I was a kid. One look at the cable I needed to run to the trunk, so I immediately packed it up and sent it back. The cable (at an additional cost of $80) is at least 1 inch thick and can be thicker. The theory is to route it along the driver's side from behind the dash into the trunk. Now this involves removing all the trim under the steering wheel, door panel, rear seat and back cushion and will likely need to cut a larger hole to get through the connectors. BMW places its radios in the trunk, and the head unit to control them is in the front of almost all cars. Why they couldn't design it to use the existing wiring I don't know. Routing all the wiring so I don't lose my DSP would be a nightmare and I can never make it look right. All this under the assumption that this device will survive, and in fact he says so. In fact, he declined and stayed OG. By the way, the first one I ordered came with rattling parts inside. came back and got a replacement. Thinking about the first one with parts rattling I was scared enough that it wasn't a quality build.
