The can opener's opening angle and rim grip distance leaves a hole approximately 3/8 inch past the rim. Find one of the old ones they gave away for free before they invented lidded jars. You can probably find one at a thrift store or flea market for 5 cents. The bottle opener works well but I had a sharp one with an outside edge. At this price I would not recommend .PS - The wooden handle in the picture looked like it had a natural finish but it is actually quite an ugly red color and one of the rivets is loose.
