My 3.5 year old daughter BEGED me for a yo-yo when she saw it in a book. I read on the bulletin board that this is the best option for such a young kid, because even with auto-return yo-yos, you still kind of have to know what you're doing. It was great when I first gave it to her. She barely managed to throw a few inches, but each time he returned to her hand. But then she dropped it, and it hit the wooden floor with a bang, then only half-rebounded. After that, after being thrown several times in the experiment, the rope became completely tangled in the axes and did not move at all. I pried the two halves open through the string hole with pliers to untangle it and see if I could figure out a way to fix it (it was broken anyway so not a huge loss) but there was no obvious way to do that open inside. Since it was still partially retracting, I simply cut the thread shorter, sealed it with tape, and tied the ring to the new end of the rope. This continued for another 5 minutes until he completely stopped retracting and turned into a plastic ball on a string. Now it's garbage in a landfill. My husband convinced me to order another one to see if it was just a fluke as they are so cheap but I can't hold my breath. Maybe she just has to wait until she's older to enjoy the yo-yo.
