Parallel port cables are unbalanced - the end that connects to the printer is different from the end that connects to the computer. I assumed the parallel port end of this cable would be connected directly to the printer's parallel port, but that's not the case. In my case this turned out to be solvable as I still had the old parallel port cable I used to connect this printer to the old computer. I could leave the old parallel cable connected to the printer and then plug the C2G cable into the computer end of the old parallel cable. The USB port end of the C2G cable connects easily to a standard USB port. After connecting everything was fine. My Windows 7 computer recognized the cable and my old LaserJet6l printer. After I found and installed the driver for the printer, everything worked. The instructions warn you about disabling the settings in the printer properties dialog for bi-directional communication and advanced printer settings, but my printer worked without them. It could be because the old 6L doesn't support two-way communication and doesn't have advanced print settings! I gave it four runs instead of five because of a mix up with this cable setup - someone doesn't have an old parallel printer cable. could not connect. But once I plugged it in, it seemed to work fine.
