The shredding mechanism is PLASTIC.
The sharpening mechanism is made of PLASTIC which wears out quickly. The only part of these stainless steel grinders is the decorative top and lid. According to the manufacturer, this is 304 stainless steel (non-magnetic grade). Perhaps at this price no one expects a product to last. I gave this one two stars instead of one as it grinds peppercorns at the moment, although it's not nearly as adjustable as the steel-handled peppermill I bought years ago.
