Review on Arris TM822G DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 Ultra-High Speed Telephony Modem by Antonio Curry

Works for me with Comcast

This review was for an Arris TM822G purchased through Revain (sold as 'new' Miakota through Revain Prime) February 2015. This is a telephone cable modem. (allows you to get both internet and phone service through your cable TV provider). I received the modem this week and hooked it up this morning with no problems. The modem came in brand new packaging and looked new as advertised. Here are the steps I took to set it up (Note: my cable/internet provider is Comcast): 1. Unpack the new modem and install the backup battery that came with it.2. Disconnected my old modem and installed a new modem in its place.3. Temporarily disconnected the ethernet cable from the modem to my router and instead connected the laptop directly to the modem.4. Connect the power cord.5. Waited about 10 minutes while the modem went through a series of starts and restarts, with different flashing sequences of the lights on the front of the modem.6. Eventually things settled down and my laptop launched a browser (Internet Explorer) which automatically opened the Comcast activation page. This page asked me to click a button to allow Comcast to search for devices to activate.7. After pressing the button, I waited another 10 minutes (the lights on the modem flashed again) and then a "success" page appeared on my laptop.8. I made sure my internet service was up on my laptop and ran a speed test (same results as the old Comcast-supplied modem, so that's good). I also checked that the phone was working (got a dial tone, called my cell phone and made sure the caller ID was correct, called back from my cell phone and made sure I was able to take calls) - everything was fine .9. I unplugged the ethernet cable from my laptop and plugged it back into my home router. Then reset my router to force an update. Waited a few minutes and made sure everything else on my home network was working and able to access the internet. So far, so good. Now all I have to do is return my old rented modem to Comcast and make sure they give me a credit so I no longer have to pay $10 a month for equipment rental. Office, they couldn't remove it from my account or print an official receipt (their computer wouldn't allow it) because their records showed it was still connected to my phone service. They took it anyway, gave me a handwritten receipt, and said I had to call Comcast to have it removed from my account. Before I sent the old modem back I took a picture of the back so I could record the serial numbers just in case. So when I got home I called Comcast and at first they had the same problem. After convincing them that I had already returned the old modem and everything (including my home phone) was working with the new modem, they did something to unlock their computer system and then removed the old modem from my account. I made sure to check the remote modem's serial number, and before hanging up I double-checked that everything was still working (actually). So everything seems fine (have to keep an eye on future bills to make sure they really don't charge more rent).

Pros
  • PacketCable 1.0 and 1.5 compatible
Cons
  • Fast OK
