Difficult to open for younger children

I bought these for my son to pass out in his preschool class. Unfortunately, pumpkins are a bit difficult to open and close for small children. It's not exactly like Easter eggs in that you just push them together. It has a dowel pin that you must properly assemble to close. This dowel pin also tends to get stuck when opening. The squishes were poorly painted and I couldn't see the detail on them like the photos. Although the pumpkin looks good.
