Review on ๐Ÿ“€ Sony BDPS6200 3D Blu-ray Player - Wi-Fi Enabled with 4K Upscaling (2014 Model) by Kevin Williams

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Glitchy streaming apps and near-perfect yet excellent image quality at a good price.

If you are new to a Blu-ray player or looking for a replacement/upgrade, this is a good choice. Picture quality is better than any Blu-ray player I've had before, S370 and S590 or Roku or Apple TV or Android stick I've used. For image quality, this is a good choice. In films that I've watched for 20+ years, I notice more detail, subtler tones, and a greater sense of depth because the gradation of the bokeh effect is clearer. Streaming services, Hulu, Netflix, etc. have the latest look, features, and feel. The player can stream streams of services in the highest quality. but the applications are buggy and regularly updated, sometimes features are added. Files played from USB or transferred locally via DLNA play smoothly and look great. Super Bit Mapping (SBM) greatly improves image quality, increasing detail and reducing banding, but IP noise reduction seems washed out when not used with Full HD sources. , or older footage, so I'll omit it. Very advanced picture quality settings are available so the picture quality can be tweaked/adjusted to suit your needs. I just leave it at Default except to tame pesky anti-aliasing, but these settings can be used to recover poorly rendered footage or respond to viewing conditions like a bright room without having to change settings on a calibrated screen. When upgrading from the Sony BDP-S590 I had to adjust the TV's calibration for black and white levels a bit, but after disabling all presets and running the calibration again I'm back where I started. a testament to Sony's commitment to fidelity in their projects. REV 11//14: Remarkably, this player does not decode or stream TrueHD Dolby on PCM multichannel when the source is USB or DLNA, and when you try, you only get stereo. It transmits TrueHD multi-channel from Blu-ray Disc via HDMI and the receiver can decode. DTS is processed without restrictions. To find out if this TrueHD limitation is a problem for you or not. Check if you have the only TrueHD multi-channel track. I was very surprised to find that I only had two and one had the best PCM 5.1 soundtrack anyway. For some reason this player is more picky about the discs, the finish, the finalization, the color of the finish, whatever it is. but these problematic discs play fine on my S590 player. In doing so, I encountered a few bugs. I can ignore them, bypass them, or unplug them to reset the player. They appear to be related to Sony firmware/firmware issues. The player has the latest firmware and has been on the market for almost a year, so this number of errors is still very unusual. Also, despite the dual-core processor, the crossbar interface looks hackneyed and sluggish (although the cute transition animation is most likely to blame), and the optional SEN screen interface is pretty but unstable. The player plays SACD and decodes FLAC. (though not seamless) to PCM output over HDMI is great for Hi-Rez HiFi. It can play higher resolution audio than this, but these are the ones I use and they work great on this player. Do you need this player over the next model and pay an extra $50 or is it even worth the upgrade? Do you need additional audio features or is SBM worth it? To me, the SBM, the added support for high-resolution audio, and the superior streaming quality are worth the premium payoffโ€”even with the bugs. Your mileage may vary. I rated this product 3 stars. 5 stars for picture quality and streaming, but 1 star for the price and 1 for bugs and slowness. Since firmware updates change performance, I'll post summary updates. Update: May 2015 Continues to fix update bugs and bugs added by updates. What a mess. I don't know if Sony or Google/Hulu/Revain is to blame, but it's shocking a year later and it's still going on. I downgraded to 2 stars "don't like" because I don't like it. I will not be buying Sony streaming players in the future. Sony support started a dialogue in the comments. Feel free to watch and comment.
