Review on πŸŽ₯ Pro Capture HDMI 4K Plus Video Capture Card by Magewell by Kevin Parker

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works but included software isn't very good, too much compression even on "lossless ", no sound

This card is essentially the same chip used in the Elgato 4K60 Pro except that The Magewell Pro 4K doesn't have a pass-through output (not a big deal since I have a 4K60 HDMI 2.0 splitter) and the Magewell costs twice as much as the Elgato 4K60 Pro. The card works but the software that comes with it (same 4K API, Elgato) is very basic and the KEY is there is NO hardware accelerated recording when switching to 4K. It is also very important to set the color modes/technologies correctly to match the HDMI 2.0 4K output. Some of the issues I encountered were audio not being recorded properly and/or missing. Therefore, the MP4 file will NOT be imported into Adobe PP or other video editing tools. Another big problem is the quality of the recording. I tried all possible options and could NOT get any lossless quality. Even using the full RGB or YCrCb 444 color space, I still got plenty of compression at the "best possible" settings. The compression became VERY noticeable in darker frames and gradients. I've tried several 3rd party "supported" products (some of them more expensive than the card itself) and in all cases the result has NOT been up to date and I've never been able to record anything better. like the original frame. Disappointed but unfortunately there is NO ONE in the HDMI 2.0 4K capture market that has a 4K hardware capable capture card, they all use software when using 4K. I think it's just the state of the branch? Are there other possibilities?

Pros
  • Brilliantly done
Cons
