Laser etches right through the coloured coating fine even at low power. Be aware that this is a plastic coloured coating over the aluminium underneath so laser etching will melt it slightly, resulting in detail and edges that aren't as clean as you would expect if you were laser etching, say, anodised aluminium. The coating does take a bit to scratch off (a fingernail won't do it but the corner of another card would if you tried moderately hard). Also the edges are rather sharp so they do need to be handled and given out with care.
