I don't use this for buttons. I use it for sewing thick seams. It is also known as the "Humpback Jumper". I've struggled with sewing thick seams on a Kenmore sewing machine for years. I discovered this little gem and it works so well! How I use it: when approaching a thick seam, stop sewing and make sure the needle is in the fabric, raise the presser foot and pass the hump bar under the presser foot because of the needle. Lower the presser foot. Start sewing and voila, the sewing machine sews right on top of the fabric knuckle! The stitches are so tight it feels like the presser foot is touching the fabric, even when the presser foot is hovering over the fabric. The hump bar automatically jumps out on the back as you continue to sew. There are two thicknesses of plastic at both ends of the hump bar. This is great because you can use it on both thinner and thicker layers of fabric. There are Hump Jumper demos on YouTube.
