I bought this unit to upgrade a DVR that is a few years old. I wanted a device that would support my existing cameras and allow me to upgrade to better cameras one at a time over time. This device easily recognized my hodgepodge of cameras and the image quality was very good. I also added an HD camera and it worked. It's a bit tricky to set up, so I removed one for that. The free iPhone app is pretty good too. In general, I am satisfied with the initial quality of the device.
