The 3-pack Butterfly Enclosure has helped us release over 100 monarch butterflies! At the end of July we started with 12 tracks. We have used these enclosures for different stages: from egg to caterpillar, from pupa to butterfly! The aviary blends into the garden with bright white netting and green trim. Lightweight mesh fabric on the top and bottom sides allows natural light and air to flow through the shelter without cooking or overheating the process. The white web helped caterpillars and cocoons shine brilliantly in photography and video. The face side of the cube is awesome when showing your stash. You can even take photos from this transparent site and the images will come out clear as if you are in a sanctuary! The caterpillars used the top of the enclosure to develop into the pupal stage. The height was perfect because even when we moved the plants in and out there was enough room not to disturb the many chrysalis at the top. A very handy feature was the double zip which we used on a daily basis. The double zipper gave us enough room to move the spurge plants in and out. The body fits easily in 4 1 gallon milkweed pots. These caterpillars are rodents, so we came and went every day! The zippers were nice because if the butterfly wanted to fly away we could leave part of the flap open for them to come out. The zips also offer plenty of maneuverability when taking photos or video in the pop-up shelter. Make sure you have plenty of pollinating plants for the butterflies to land on to dry their wings after they hatch from the pupa. Spurge also grew in our garden, and when the butterflies returned, they laid their eggs on the underside of the spurge leaves. So this season we got 3 generations. Then we put the tiny caterpillars in the enclosure. When the last butterfly has flown away, perhaps at the end of October, the aviary can simply be cleaned and sprayed, folded up and stored until next season. I highly recommend the retractable butterfly case. We thought 3 packs was too many but for our veteran season it worked out great because we ended up using 2 and gifting 1 to our milkweed supplier who himself used 3 casings in total!
