decent lock: provides visible security and withstands a mischievous (childish) attempted break-in

I'm happy with these locks and feel they give me average security. "Medium security" means visible security paired with sufficient strength to withstand a malicious attempt at break-in. A determined, well-equipped thief will pick these locks - but if that were your goal, you wouldn't be looking at 1/4 U-locks. I believe these locks offer protection from: * An "honest" person who might be tempted to steal if they come across unguarded valuables. * a mischievous thief (child) who steals for fun or dares to try. The locks are made of rust-resistant material that can provide years of use in inclement weather. I'm not sure they can provide lifetime use in terms of items in the same way as brass. A potential downside to this lock is the 'viewing window' which holds your combination on the short side of the rectangular case. Side placement isn't an issue for most lock apps, but it's something to keep in mind. The combination setting method is pretty standard. Unlock the lock, rotate the shackle sideways, push it all the way down until it clicks, and then rotate the shackle to the locked position. The end of the strut is now outside the lock but at the level it would be if locked. Set the dials to the desired number, rotate the bar back and pull up so the bar is back in its normal swing plane.
