The device is powered from the peripheral end (the camera in my case). Not the end of the computer.

I bought an extension cable for a Polycom conference camera. The camera is under the TV in the conference room, but the computer is on the conference table. This allowed me to hide all the cables by running CAT5 behind the TV under the table.
