This is a long review as there is so little information on this model on the web. I was looking for a portable stereo with decent sound, a CD player, and the ability to play music from a USB stick without spending any money. ridiculous amount of money. Some of the "famous brands" did this a few years ago, but apparently not anymore. The only ones I could find are in India and no one seems to be selling older models in the States. I've been looking for weeks. Now all the big companies focus on docking stations for Apple products, which I don't care about. Many have extra inputs, which is good, but since I need portability, I don't want to mess with multiple electronics and extra cables. So USB was a requirement. There was a choice of four brands that I had never heard of. I chose the Naxa NPB-428 because it honestly looked bigger than the others. I'm not expecting home stereo quality, but I was hoping for something with some volume that would sound better than an old transistor radio. My experience with smaller ghetto blasters from other manufacturers is that they sound tiny and tinny (boost boost is mostly a joke), so I wanted to avoid as much disappointment as possible beforehand. I just got it, I can't confirm. its durability. Here are my first impressions: It's smaller than I expected. That doesn't mean it's tiny - it just looked kinda bigger in the only picture that seems to exist anywhere on the internet. I've posted my own photos here to help anyone curious. It's also very light. This is definitely the golden age of plastic. Despite its size, it is quite well built. Space is tight, but the controls aren't annoyingly crowded. A standard-sized USB stick is a little annoying, but not much. The CD player works perfectly. I've only tried commercial discs. I don't know how it will work with homemade mp3 discs as I will be using USB for mp3. The USB input works great. This is exactly what I needed. There's no information on the display other than the track number, so don't expect fancy scrolling text. I'm not going to put a cassette in this thing, so I don't have any information on that. I assume Aux is ok. It's just an aux input, which is pretty much the same as anyone else that has one. Radio is good because it's digital. Why every modern boombox uses an old-fashioned dial-up radio is beyond me, but many still do. My reception is better than I expected. The sound is not as good as I would like, but better than I expected. It has quite a loud sound (I'm glad I avoided small boomboxes), and stripping the speakers will only expand the sound and make it bigger. If you want to be portable, that's fine with speakers attached. It definitely sounds like so-so speakers with a plastic box, but the size helps with the fullness. The main thing is no tinny and small sound. It's not very noisy, but it will definitely fill the immediate area. At full volume there is no distortion at all. The bass boost is okay at lower volumes, but at higher volumes it really brings out the sound of the plastic box, so turn it off if you turn it on. There are no equalizer or tone settings at all here - you just get volume and bass boost. So don't expect to be able to customize the sound to your liking. Unlike some other stereos I've looked at, the remote controls the USB input, which is nice. None of the information I could find mentions what type of batteries are needed. The stereo requires 8 D batteries and the remote control requires 2 AAA batteries. I don't know yet how long they will last. In general I am satisfied. It's perfect for my needs to work in the yard or basement or wherever I have projects. Easy enough to pick up and take with me, or I could leave it in one part of the yard and still hear well enough in another. With detachable speakers it's meant to be used as a bookshelf system, but I think that role will be frustrating for most people. As a boombox, that's more than enough.
