Use alongside a cheap PWM controller

I use this controller along with a cheaper PWM controller. I have eight 100 watt panels of which 400 watts goes into this MPPT box and 400 watts into a cheap $20 PWM box. So in direct sunlight at midday this MPPT puts out about 800mA (0.8 amps) more charge to my batteries, but when the sun goes past and sets I get 500mA (0.5 amps) more charge to my batteries off a cheap PWM block, then an MPPT controller, so I'm not impressed with almost the same charging results just at different times of the day. This controller feels solid and has a few more features on the display and large cooling fins on the back to make it last longer, but the assembly is a joke! You will need to attach 4 screws to the mounting surface but there is no template so you will need to measure and hope you get it accurate. Then place the device on top of it, which seems simple enough, but wait! There is no way to tighten the screws once the controller is installed. So when you insert the wires into the slots, the whole device will detach from the screws and fall down. No big deal, right? Just hold the controller with one hand, but if you're like me, use one hand to hold a screwdriver to secure the wires and the other hand to hold the wire, so there's no way to stop the controller from pry off the fastening screws. So you need three hands! There's also no way to tighten the screws once the controller is installed, which obscures them. To counteract this, I added a fifth screw in the top center that prevents the controller from being easily removed. In terms of charging, both have a temperature sensor and both charge to 14.1 volts and then float. I can only hope that the MPPT controller will keep the batteries fully charged and not a cheap controller. Who knows. If not, time will tell which will be last or not, but given the difference in price, I hope this one lasts. Oh, and the instructions don't explain what the blinking green LED in the top right does, so I assume it's telling you it's getting sun, but once you plug it in, it gets annoying real quick.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Good but not great
