Design flaw - limited use on large fruit/veg

I already have an OXO mandolin set that I like and use quite a bit. However, the set is limited by the thickness of the slices, so I bought it because of the good reviews and because it was small (didn't give me more than I needed, which is an adjustable thickness slicer). Unfortunately, there appear to be two design flaws in the thing. First, the mandolin has a ridge at the very end, so whatever you're cutting, whether it's a large vegetable or fruit, will hit the edge. Think of sweet potatoes or cucumbers that you cut lengthwise. Basically you can get a slice no more than 4 to 5 inches long and then it starts to hit the edge of the mandolin and that's all you can cut. With softer large fruits/veggies this may not be a problem as they will just curl up and you may be able to cut further, but I tried this with sweet potatoes and that was a problem. The result was a lot of shards. The second disadvantage is that the thickness adjustment mechanism creates a kind of wedge shape, which causes the rear edge of the fruit/vegetable to hook onto this wedge. So even with an apple (!), which is not nearly as hard as a potato, I cut it once and then ripped out the slice from under the mandolin to free it from the pinch point between the blade and the adjustable plastic plate. Very frustrating. Obviously it's a comeback. Even with a regular Fuji apple, I couldn't make lengthwise cuts (one quarter of the apple) so the fruit wouldn't get stuck after each bite. I ended up having to make cross sections that were stupidly smaller than I needed. It shouldn't be that hard. Returned.
