Our 26 pound dog is very social and often overly friendly. If he sees another dog while walking, he barks loudly. He wants to play with another dog. He will really pull on the leash or harness. Another dog owner may have an aggressive dog or an unfriendly dog. When we first used this device we used a quieter tone and he stopped barking. I think he was surprised and kept sniffing the air. He looked at us, what have you done? We would repeat that when he barked at someone passing in front of our house at night, or at the reflection in the windows. We welcome barking in the middle of the night when he sees a stranger around. It was such a quick fix, and we've used it a few times, that we doubt it did any harm. We know that the manufacturer claims it is not harmful. The product is well designed. We are very happy.
