Review on πŸŽ™οΈ OM Digital Solutions DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder: Capture Crisp and Clear Audio with Cutting-Edge Features by Juan Moncrief

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Big pros, small cons

I didn't know what to expect from this item but so far I'm satisfied. SOUND: Superb quality, amazing crystal clear sound in STXQ mode (highest setting). The stock stereo microphone is actually pretty good too; I was expecting to have to buy another microphone but I don't know if I need one yet. INTERFACE: The controls are a little clunky, but that's a small price to pay for the quality, and given the extremely limited footprint of this tiny thing, I think they did a great job on the design. It's plug and play, so easy to use. It also acts as a jump drive for storage. Not to mention that I've worn this thing down and the batteries are still fully charged. USE: I use it for lectures, business meetings, reminders and pretty much everything else. **However, I actually bought it to try as a field recorder. I'm a musician and I experiment with samples and I found this perfect for it. After all, it was designed for podcasts. Certain currently released field recorders (Zoom H4, Edirol R9, etc.) have received a lot of bad press; noisy, bulky, poor quality, etc., and there's no way I would buy an MD recorder. I bought this one for less than half the price of one of these and the difference in quality is unreal. CONS: There aren't many of these, but the biggest ones are the inability to rename files on the fly and resume recording once. stopped (you can do this if you just pause the recording, but I'd like to be able to resume recording from a stopped or even "turned off" recording); It can do both, but I haven't figured it out yet. Another problem is that it doesn't come with a suitcase. It's silver, metallic, and has a glass screen, so I always feel like it might get scratched all over the place. I would also like a removable storage option. For these small issues I downgraded the rating to 4 stars; If it was 4.5 I would take it. If they came out with another one that fixed all these little problems, it would cost me another $25-$40. All in all incredible sound (44.1kHz CD quality) and pretty easy to use. Good enough for a field recorder and no "tape" or hard drive noise.
