In the past, I mainly used whey protein and I'd make the smoothie mixed with milk. My stomach can sometimes be sensitive and sometimes I'd my stomach would get pretty upset after having protein shakes. Not sure if it's just the whey protein, milk or both. I mentioned this to a trainer I was using and he suggested trying vegan protein powder so I searched on amazon and found this and went with this. I think the first times I used it, I mixed it with water, but now I use coconut milk (Silk brand and comparable types) and I haven't experienced any stomach issues. The taste is fine. I've had worse and I've had better, but since it doesn't upset my stomach, so far, that's the most important to me. I'm guessing because of the rice protein, there's a slight after or side taste which tastes like rice cakes to me so that's a little different. It also has a slight gritty texture which is different but not a big turn-off or anything. For those two reasons, I give it 4 vs. 5 stars. I used it after most workouts when I first got it, but wasn't working out a ton then and since I've started working out a lot more over the past month, I haven't been using it, so I can't attest to how well it attributes to muscle growth.
