I had an old PS3 with a very noisy fan and an overheating problem. Disassembled, excess thermal paste found from factory assembly. I cleaned the heatsinks and chipset surfaces and applied a small amount of Antec thermal paste in an X shape. I rebuilt and tested the PS3 - it runs much cooler, the fan runs at a lower speed and is almost inaudible. I don't know how much of this drastic improvement is due to the correct mounting of the chips and how much is due to the Antec grease, but the grease clearly works at a certain level.
