Great product for the money

I bought this Philips 5992 DVD player in December 2009. I used it almost daily to play video files from hard drives via USB port. There are very few file formats that this device cannot play. If it is a foreign codec, the program is probably in a format that this DVD player can process. I would suggest not using a hard drive larger than 500 gigabytes as loading a catalog on a larger one takes too long. If you have that many files, it's probably a good idea to keep them on two separate drives in case your hard drive fails. Restoring all files on a 1 gigabyte hard drive takes a long time. If you want to play back from a hard drive, you must reformat your hard drive to Fat 32 BEFORE loading video files onto it. The DVD player does not recognize newer formats on XP computers. Most hard drives come preinstalled with a more modern format. You can check the format by connecting the drive to your computer and clicking on the drive and then on Properties. You can find free hard drive formatting software on the Internet. The DVD player hasn't given me any problems despite heavy use, and being able to convert an HDMI picture to 1080I is a definite benefit. You can really see the difference with a good HDTV with an HDMI cable. I'm having a hard time telling the difference between Blue Ray and converted standard DVD. Regionless Hack is also a nice feature. The guide to changing the region code is a bit confusing. It took a long time to figure out what was missing from another reviewer's instructions. Here is the fully written hack. Turn on the DVD player. Open the DVD tray (you cannot access the settings page when the tray is closed). Press the "Setting" button on the remote control. Press the right arrow on the ring around the large OK button to bring up the settings menu. It's the third icon from the top right of the screen. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 Press the up arrow on the gray ring around the big OK button to move the area code from 1 to 0. To exit, press the menu button. Thanks to M Wilson for the hack. The instructions were a bit confusing. I hope the additional information I've added will help clear up some of the confusion. I am very happy with this DVD player and its versatility. I highly recommend it.
