Summary: All three inverters were able to power my Black & Decker portable air conditioner. This is a 120VAC unit rated 9 AMPS (equivalent to 1080W). However, there were some very noticeable differences between the inverters, so let's dive deeper. But first, how do you choose an inverter that works with your air conditioner? When powering devices such as an air conditioner, refrigerator, motor, or an "inductive" load, you should be aware that the inrush current drawn by these devices will be much higher than the current drawn after they are turned on . . You will often find indications that the starting current can be 3 to 7 times or more than normal consumption. The problem is that this isn't a practical area for determining what size inverter you should buy, so be aware of this simple trick. You want to beg, borrow or steal a voltmeter with a current measuring function. Often these are meters with a clamp that wraps around a wire in the power cord of the device you want to measure. In addition, the clamping ammeter must be able to fix or "freeze" the maximum value. You simply connect the meter to the power cord, set the meter to display the maximum current used, and turn the meter on. My ammeter read 27A when I turned on the AC unit. So I multiplied 27A * 120V to get the number of watts (power) the unit is drawing at its maximum amperage which is 3240W. You need the watts value as the wattage is listed for all of these inverters. When I ran into a problem trying to figure out how much current my AC device draws when starting, I was able to customize an inverter to run. I needed an inverter that can output at least 1080W continuously and can output at least 3240W for a few seconds. The best match I found with a rating of 4.5 or higher was a 2000W inverter capable of handling a 4000W peak load. A unit with these specs should theoretically power my AC unit, but for fun I also ordered two 3000W inverters that can handle up to 6000W peak power. One final note: for air conditioning or anything with electronics, you need a PURE SINE WAVE inverter. (THIS ARTICLE IS UNDER REVIEW) Before you share your notes on each individual model, let's take a look at a few things that all of these inverters have in common. a) First, all manuals are written in Chinese, which is not surprising. But they do give you basic information, and it doesn't really take much to hook up these things. However, read the safety tips. b) When connecting the inverters to my battery, there was a strong spark when the cable was connected to the battery. I have experience but I was still surprised by the size of the spark. It acted like there was a short circuit in the inverter. But no, when I touched the wire a second time there was no spark and after I pulled the wire to the battery all the inverters turned on normally. I should stress that the inverters were off, nothing was plugged into the inverters AC outlet, and there were no instructions in any of the manuals to suggest I should have connected the battery any other way (I connected the positive and negative leads to the ). corresponding terminals on the inverter, then connected the other end of the negative cable to the battery negative terminal, and finally connected the positive cable to the battery, even though the inverter was switched off. However, it is possible to work around this problem. Of course, my Magnum 60A main inverter does not do this when plugged in. Assuming these "cheap Chinese" inverters aren't equipped with the necessary circuitry to prevent such sparking, which was severe enough to damage the electrode on my battery (see photo) c) Some of the speakers will invert Supplied with a wired remote control that allows you to turn the inverter on and off from a remote location (just a few meters away). Convenience aside, should you care? In one case yes. If you need to add some sort of switch to turn off the inverter when the batteries are low, then it's good to have at least an outlet for remotely turning it on and off as it's a low-power device. Without them, you must use a relay (mechanical or electronic) large enough to interrupt the flow of current from the battery to the inverter. I've seen solid state relays on Revain that can handle current, but the instructions say they can't be used with inverters! A better solution would be a much cheaper solid state relay that would simply trigger remote contacts to turn off the inverter. Energy converter for solar system, autonomous. (2000W 48V/remote control). $299 Based on other reviews I was surprised that a 2000w inverter would start my AC unit but it did. However, Device XYZ has a few deal killers. First, the Revain photos show the plastic cover for the bare AC wires on the front of the inverter. My device arrived without a cover, so the cables are exposed. This may or may not bother some people. But what got me to hit the return button was the AC voltage jumped all over the place. Under constant load, the measuring device on the inverter reached a minimum of 95 VAC and a maximum of 126 VAC. And it was measured within a minute. Again, the air conditioning had been running for a while and wouldn't turn on or off. A 2000w inverter should not have this problem with a 1100w load. ----------------------- - -------------------------- ----------------------------------------------2) WZRELB 3000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter 48VDC to 120VAC with 2 AC Sockets + AC Terminal Block 2 Sets RV Battery Cables Solar System Camping $429. The WZRELB inverter is clearly manufactured by the same company as the XYZ inverter. Box, packaging and instructions are the same. In addition, this block also lacked a cover over the exposed AC connectors. Ha ha. Both this model and the XYZ come with four battery cables. The cables must be doubled - two positive and two negative - to connect them to the battery and the inverter. Strange but not critical. This inverter ran my AC unit perfectly and the voltage stayed perfectly stable. ------------ -------------------------------------- ----------3) Xijia 3000W (6000W Peak) Pure Sine Wave Inverter DC 48V to AC 120V 60Hz Solar Converter for Home Use Car (DC 48V to AC 120 @ 60Hz 3000 w). $310. (THIS ARTICLE IS UNDER REVIEW) This inverter has performed well. He had no trouble turning on the AC unit and the voltage was stable. This is the inverter I went for. It was only $11 more than a 2000W unit. Even if XYZ didn't have any voltage changes, why not go for a bigger device? This inverter is also $120 cheaper than the other 3000w unit. From what I understand the $429 inverter can boast $120 improvements over this inverter. To be fair, one reviewer put the $429 device on an oscilloscope and was very impressed with its performance. However, this particular model did not have a remote socket, which was an important feature for me. This device also uses dual leads for positive and negative battery connections. However, the cables end in a connector. Reviews about this inverter are generally positive. One reviewer doesn't like the odd single 7-pin socket. But the standard US power plug on my air conditioner fits snug and tight. This reviewer felt that the inverter should have two outlets as it puts out 60A, but I would like to point out that this is only PEAK PERFORMANCE. 25A maximum for continuous load. If necessary, use an extension. I also love that a reviewer has their device from December 2017 and it's still working.END
