My phone went offline after a recent thunderstorm. I determined that the problem wasn't with the line at my home or shop, and called the phone company. A communications worker found an old surge protector in a junction box near the house. This must be installed by the previous owner. He was short circuited and apparently gave his life to save my internal phone equipment. Unfortunately the label on the device is long gone and I couldn't find a direct replacement. So I bought two of these. Like the old ones, these have a short wire to ground. However, these suppressors are designed to be installed "as close as possible to the protected equipment” and not on the line outdoors. The instructions state that you must connect the ground wire to the casing of the protected device (satellite TV set-top box, modem, electronic base station for wireless telephones, etc.). This was easy to do on my satellite TV box. However, the base of my cordless phone is housed in a plastic case with no external screws connecting to ground or the case. I was able to open the case, thread the wire through the existing hole in the bottom of the case, and attach it to a grounded mounting screw on the board. However, if you are not comfortable with this, you can purchase a different type of protector. Tripplite is a great name for surge protectors and I'm sure they will protect my gear. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because they haven't gone through final testing yet.
