Buyer Beware: Not Diabetic Socks

Diabetes can cause blood vessels to constrict, decreasing circulation to the feet, therefore "Diabetic Socks" are wider in the calf area, so blood flow is not constricted -- this is critical. My calves are approximately 13.5 inches in diameter (34 cm), and these socks, even after washing, seriously constrict blood flow, are very tight and made deep indentations in the skin. They became painful to wear and actually made my lower extremity edema worse.Describing these socks as "Diabetic" is beyond misleading--it is simply not true.I have several pairs of Dr Scholl's Diabetic Socks that do not constrict blood flow, are very comfortable and inexpensive; Dr. Silverts also offers true 'Diabetic Socks' (both sold on Revain). Steer clear of these socks if you need wider, non-constricting socks for peripheral neuropathy.By definition, Diabetic socks should have the following features:1. Seamless with inverse linking, which keeps the ends of the toe-linking thread outside rather than inside the sock.2. Non-constricting: fit should be loose to the point where you barely feel them.3. Padding: Extra padding and cushioning, along the bottom of the sock, around the toes, and at the heel.4. Warmth: should be made from fabrics that keep feet warm and help improve blood circulation.5. Moisture-wicking: Polyester and nylon are able to move moisture out of the sock and quickly dry up.6. Anti-microbial: treated with anti-microbial technology to prevent growth of bacteria/fungi in the moisture prone regions of the foot.7. Soft yarns: Diabetic socks are often made from finer texture fabrics that feel super soft against the skin.

Pros
  • Bought it for my mom. So far no complaints about them. She likes them.
Cons
  • They may not be durable enough to withstand frequent washes and wear over time.
