Review on Toyota Camry TYC 1-17774 Replacement Starter by Tom Lantz

Perfect fit for my 1998 Toyota Camry V-6 at an amazing price!

So far so good. This starter is perfect for my 1998 Toyota Camry XLE with a 3.0 liter six cylinder engine. I burned the original starter motor (too long story to check) and looked at two auto parts stores and the Toyota parts department for a wire from the battery to the starter motor to no avail. Since I couldn't find anything, I wrapped the cable very well with electrical tape since all the copper strands were intact. The starter is very tight; I removed the entire air filter box and air filter and removed the bracket from the cruise control solenoid and it made a world of difference. I was working away from home and didn't have my usual tools, but 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets and a 3/8" socket would do the trick. One word of advice, if you're installing a new starter (which will fit perfectly!), be sure to rock the starter back and forth while pushing it in before installing the mounting bolts, as the gear obviously needs to mesh with the opposite gear on the flywheel . The bolt is almost tight so the starter can't back up and change position to keep the gears from meshing. Assembling was relatively easy. If you have trouble remembering which hoses and cables you disconnected, mark them as you remove them. Contrary to some other reviewers I've noticed a real difference in sound between this and the original starter and if anything this one seems to spin faster and start the car just as if not faster than the factory original. In less than $90. , this is a HUGE deal for a NEW non-Remanufactured Starter Motor. It has been tested before shipping and comes with electrical documentation.

Pros

Cons
  • A bit torn
