When I took it out of the box the thermometer read DOA. A quick press of the power button indicates that the battery is already installed. It's set to conserve battery power when not in use. It worked without having to calibrate the thermometer, but I'm glad the company provides instructions if you need them. This is the second one I've bought. My first purchase was immediately passed on to our aunt as my husband complimented the quality and needed for Thanksgiving turkey. I'm a vegetarian and only use it to provide 80º to 120º water temperature for bread or yoghurt. The test stick is too long for a 1 cup measuring cup but works well. It doesn't have a clip to keep it in place in the water, but the readings are instantaneous. My old one was slow to rise and had to be trimmed to keep an eye on the temp. Big Pro: I enjoy tossing it in the fridge and seeing it magnetically stick to the side. Cool! Washing afterwards is also easy as I only have to wash the metal part. Do not put it in the dishwasher.
