According to the manual, this gauge is good at +/- 0.004 inches or +/- 0.1mm - good enough to detect a bodywork overhaul, but not good enough to distinguish between a newly painted car and one who hasn't. My experience with this confirms this: I have surfaces that have just been painted but have no paint thickness because the paint thickness is within error. There's no calibration, nothing to ensure accuracy, it's just a toy to tell you roughly how much paint is left, give or take a full coat or two. If you're detailing or painting and trying to figure out exactly how much paint you're using, you'll have to open your wallet a little wider because this little thing just isn't good enough for the job.
