Great mil thickness gauge on vehicles

I do damage analysis and cost estimates and this gauge lets me know where the car was previously repaired. I recommend it to anyone buying a new or used car as I have looked at many cars and found that there were no visible signs of previous repairs but this sensor told me they were. some filler, paint or transparent material separately. Will not work on urethane bumpers, fiberglass or plastic parts

Pros
  • Sizing
Cons
  • Legacy model

Gives you exactly what you paid for. No less, no more.

According to the manual, this gauge is good at +/- 0.004 inches or +/- 0.1mm - good enough to detect a bodywork overhaul, but not good enough to distinguish between a newly painted car and one who hasn't. My experience with this confirms this: I have surfaces that have just been painted but have no paint thickness because the paint thickness is within error. There's no calibration, nothing to ensure accuracy, it's just a toy to tell you roughly how much paint is left, give or take a full coatโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Gauges
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging

Enough for comparing panels or for Tesla owners!

I'm not quite sure about the expected tolerance, the instructions expressly state "The measurement accuracy is not guaranteed for coatings on steel". Hence my skepticism; I tested a 2013 BMW that had only been waxed 2 or 3 times and was only 1-2 mils thick. It's impossible for a car with undamaged paint and basecoat to have just 1 mil. I then checked the bag and the gauge read 2 mils. I've put two sheets together and it says 3 mil. I have accurate stocks at work and will do further testing butโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Check, measure and check
Cons
  • Slightly torn
