Review on 🏑 Sonoff Assistant with Monitoring Support: Enhanced Compatibility for Smart Home by Kenny Stephens

Ugly user interface and hardware firmware can go wrong

The power supply is based on WiFi and I haven't connected to Hassio yet. I've tried resetting the device to Local API mode with no success so far. The Android app is clunky and requires a cloud login. I let Hassio run without a cloud. After much frustration in DIY mode, I tried flashing it with Tasmota. Soldering the wires was a bit tricky - I suggest using connectors instead. Then I found out that some FTDI and other serial tools run at 5V and logic at 3.3V. After finally getting the full 3.3V setup, the board looks dead. Only zeros are output. Even if it works, it needs to be calibrated. Sonoff ZigBee devices by comparison are flawless and just work. I think I'm done with Sonoff Wifi devices for now. I already have a power meter that I made out of a rasp and an inductive current sensor. Measuring power is not that difficult. It cost a little more, but I wasn't fighting the black box, I built the components to the full spec. For some people, this can work just fine. Maybe my block is broken. Not nearly as easy as their Zigbee devices, though.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly crumpled
