I was able to cut and solder strips of different lengths without any problems. The LEDs on this strip are closer together so I didn't even need to diffuse them for my project. The entire strip comes in a clear plastic rectangular sleeve, so I simply cut the top of the sleeve and attached it with alligator clips to make soldering the strips together easier. Then the shut-off valve is simply bent to the soldering point. They get a bit warm when using short lengths and I can see how they can burn out if you let them burn while all 32 feet are wound on the spool. I wouldn't leave them on the spool for long just to see if they work and then untangle them from the spool. Also, the spool is cardboard, not plastic.
