Not What They Claim

I bought 4 sets of these for the bay window in our bedroom. At first appearance the material looks crisp and heavy. I ordered the white ones and it reminded me of the old habits nuns wore, but after being hung on the windows, they looked like they should be hanging in a hospital ward. Very unattractive.I didn’t worry about their appearance…I bought them to help keep our bedroom in the southwest corner of our home cooler…a job they failed to do. We live in the St. Louis, Missouri area. The heat today was a high of 93° and humidity was relatively low at 44%. I hung the curtains yesterday afternoon, and have been tracking the temp in our bedroom since then. During the day we have the whole house A/C set at 72°, and starting at 4:00 pm we lower it to 71°, and finally turn it to the night setting of 70° at around 9:00 pm, which is 2-3 hours before we turn in for the night. Today when I got up at 8:30 am, the temp in our room was 72°, not 70°. As the day progressed it got to 76° with the thermostat set at 72°. I had lowered the temp to 71° at 4:00 pm and just now (8:48 pm) I checked the temp in that room and it’s 74° - and that was hours after I gave up and turned on two Vornado fans/air movers, to circulate the A/C cooled air. Not what I expected or hoped for based on the reviews and the info provided from the manufacturer. As far as room darkening, all around the curtains - sides, top and bottom, light leaks out. The top is the worst and it looks like a corona around the sun, absolutely bright white light. These would need to be flush mounted all around the window to prevent the light leaking in.As others mentioned, the room darkening black backing does not go to the bottom of the drape, so you have several inches of white acting as a band at the hem. They are creased from packaging, and they bell outwards at the bottom of the curtain. All in all, I am thoroughly disappointed. But reading the reviews for other brands’ 100% blackout curtains, I found my complaints about this brand mirrored in those reviews. If the info ONLY mentioned room darkening, that would be one thing…but they mention "REDUCE ENERGY USAGE WITH THESE THERMAL INSULATING CURTAINS”. These blackout curtains were placed OVER flush mounted cellular shades - not bare windows. The rest of our home which faces east on the front and west on the back, is quite comfortable. We just bought this home, and the HVAC system was replaced 7 years ago, and as I said the rest of the home is comfy. I bought these curtains because they’re advertised as energy saving. They’re not. At all. Plus they’re just really unattractive. As you can tell…I do NOT recommend these curtains.

Pros
  • Can be used alone or paired with other window treatments for a layered look
Cons
  • May not provide a complete seal against drafts
