The first one I received didn't close well and I ended up getting the second (no return of the first!). I started to wonder if it was a design issue and opened up the back (three screws) and took a closer look. The rubber wedge that was supposed to hold the tape in place slipped a bit on one side that had a tab on the left. I cut off the small tab pictured on the right and now it snaps into place with no problem! In fact, it works even better with no game after blocking. I had this tape measure for years that slipped here and there but eventually broke so this will be my second purchase. I'm making the same modification for the 25ft version I have. So if it slips, cut the tab on the rubber wedge. The mechanism inside is very simple, so even a 10-year-old child can modify this tape measure. I now have two working 16 foot measuring tapes that I can't complain about!
