It's plug and play in the old MacBook Uni aluminum case!
Turns out I didn't need 2x2GB because there was one free slot (which is unusual for most laptops), but 1x2GB would do. However, I'm glad I have a matching dual channel performance kit that I've read will work in this old MacBook with two SODIMMs installed.
