Review on Canon EOS Mirrorless Camera Body Camera & Photo by Chris Horton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good alternative to the DSLR and finally performance.

This is how the M1-M4 should have been - basically a mini DSLR with good performance. You can read the specs elsewhere, so I'll focus on why this works for me where previous models didn't. Performance comes first - finally a mirrorless camera from Canon that acts like big brothers. Focus times are better, dynamic range is good and sensor quality is excellent. With the right lenses it can easily compete with the lower D limit and the whole Ti range. I often choose this camera over 5D for many mobile applications - where I don't want to drag a full-screen beast. And I don't feel like I'm missing anything - I use an adapter for the larger EOS L glass I have, and while there's often a "lens with camera attached" effect, it doesn't bother me too much very. And native lenses aren't far behind either - Canon has done a good job with that. The built-in viewfinder also suits my usage profile and I'm glad I don't have to fiddle with an external viewfinder. If you don't need it, the M6 is roughly the same camera with a few other minor improvements. Can't really comment on consumer features as I don't use them often - of course sometimes moving the screen is nice, but 99% of the time it's just not my cup of tea. If you want to talk about the cons - the battery life is too short, so get a second battery. That whole screen and viewfinder consumes power compared to my old DSLRs. Sometimes the screen is hard to read in bright light - maybe they could find a simple solution like a shadow. Increasing the brightness will only make the battery problem worse. And while the viewfinder is good, it's still not an optical viewfinder - almost, but not quietly. Maybe the next generation?
