With this handy little guide you can easily get even and straight slices. I put a piece of thin, flexible cutting board in the bottom so I wouldn't cut the bamboo surface. I find it best to hold the bread flat with one hand and slice determinedly, always keeping the top edge of the blade against the bamboo stand and tilting the bottom of the blade slightly to the right to avoid slicing vertical. My only complaint is that the sides aren't rigid and wobble back and forth slightly during use. But this "bug" is the inevitable result of a handy feature that lets you stack the entire block for storage. So it's a compromise.
