Big gash (12 inches) with exposed glue -- not an issue with packaging, just quality of the product

We called the manufacturer to see what our options were after it arrived damaged with a 12 inch gash that was deep as well, and they said they should be able to send a replacement part for the top. After 10 minutes on hold we were told to go through ebay. Given the other reviews of similar issues, we're going to think on an exchange but will probably just return and buy a different brand. Huge pain since it is very heavy (and we live in a fourth floor walkup). Was excited it was US made but with this quality, would not recommend to others.
