We have a lot of thunderstorms here and since we have external devices connected with CAT6 cables (generator, 5GHz antenna for our internet etc.) I wanted these incoming connections to go through a surge protector before they to be connected to the network. my network switch, although they are also fully shielded and grounded connections. It never hurts to be safe with all the thunderstorms we have. I bought a couple of these in 2015 and took the time to properly assemble and ground them. Then in 2017 I bought a few more for extra units because I thought they still worked, but I never knew that despite all the thunderstorms we experienced, nothing got hit and nothing went out. Perhaps this in itself is evidence of these things. but I still wasn't sure if they had the ability to absorb multiple hits or if they were disposable. That changed last weekend. We had a deadly thunderstorm right over our house and at the same moment we saw a powerful lightning strike, the power went out for a few seconds and our internet went down and stayed disconnected. (We get our internet from a 5GHz dish outside on a nearby mountain since there's nothing else in our area.) The dish looked fine. The POE injector was still sending power, the radio on the back was still working and the RX light was on, the connection on my switch port was still showing 100Mbps full duplex but no internet. I've tried everything. Changing the POE injector, restarting the bowl, and even leaving the bowl's radio unplugged for 24 hours to drain it completely. I was about to order a new radio and then I thought "hey why not remove the surge protector" even though the mains and electricity seemed to be working just fine. Here it is! the lightning must have produced a powerful wave to provoke it. After I removed it and replaced it with a new one, my disk was back online. So, here's proof that these things really work. Happy to buy a $23 replacement instead of a new Switch for hundreds (assuming it comes to my Switch. And if that's true, where next!)
