Review on πŸ’‘ Seasonic Focus SGX-650: Compact 650W Gold SFX Power Supply with Full Modular Design and Silent 120mm Fan by Edward Henderson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Calm; flexible cables; Cable ties!

**UPDATE** After about 14 months of use, the PSU started to have problems when drawing 400W or more of power. I filled out an RMA and received a replacement power supply in just over a week and it has been working fine for a month now. Will update my review if anything else comes up. First review below: I first bought an EVGA GM-550 power supply, which is a bit smaller and pretty quiet except that I had horrible coil whine under load. This is usually dampened by other components' fans, but my new build uses an EKWB A240G, so my entire system only has two fans plus PSU. The A240G is likely to have some very quiet fans, meaning that if there's any coil noise anywhere, you'll hear it loud and clear. So I returned the GM-550 and got the SGX-650 instead and now under load all I can hear is my inner thoughts saying "Good job bro". Experience: Similarities1. Both the GM-550 and SGX-550 weigh about the same2. The fan doesn't turn on until the PSU warms up a bit (even under load, it turns off for a while)3. Dead silence at idle4. Turn on the self-tester5. Over 80 Gold Awards1. The GM-550 is about 2.5 cm smaller. The cables in the GM-550 are jacketed (no individual jacket), but the jacket they use makes the cables very difficult to work with. They don't like bending or curling at all. SGX-650 cables look better in my opinion and are much, much, much more flexible.3. The GM-550 supports slightly fewer SATA devices, but that's to be expected since the GM-550 and not the GM-650 supports the same number of devices as the SGX-650.4. SGX-650 comes with cable ties! The GM-550 doesn't, but it does have those sticky cord wraps (don't know the real name) that can get the job done, but take up a bit more space and don't look as clean. The SGX-650 also comes with sticky wire strands.5. Finally, and most importantly to me, the SGX-650 model I received had no coil hum. How general. Is that thing even turned on? I know coil whine can be hit or miss, but if I had to choose between the two again I would choose the SGX-650 simply because the cables look better and are a lot easier to work with.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Hard to remember, but it was
